NHS Own Health

Over 65s

Ageing is a natural process that affects how your body responds to general ‘wear and tear’ and illness. Some conditions become more common as we get older, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and incontinence.

Any changes that you can make to your diet and lifestyle can help reduce your risk of developing these long term conditions and prevent an existing condition from getting worse:

  • Eat a wide range of foods‚ particularly plenty of fruit and vegetables
  • Cut down on fatty food‚ choose sunflower or olive oil for cooking and choose low-fat versions where you can
  • Eat less salt and salty foods such as breakfast cereals‚ bread‚ bacon‚ ham and salty snacks like crisps
  • Keep your weight within ‘normal’ limits
  • Quit smoking
  • Exercise regularly in a way that suits you
  • Keep your alcohol intake within the recommended limits
